The Collapse of Latvia

Aryan Kondekar — May 26, 2026

The sudden fall of the Latvian government is sending ripples throughout the Balkan region. In early May, Ukrainian Drones crossed into Latvian territory, sparking a national security crisis. Originally, these drones were intended for Russia due to the presence of advanced Russian technologies in the Baltics. This event might appear small, but it underscores Latvia’s air defense system. The public has been outraged at their government’s inability to provide air safety. This uprising led to a major power shift in the Latvian government as Prime Minister Evika Siliņa fired her Defense Minister, Andris Spruds, on May 11. Silina publicly stated the incidents, “clearly demonstrated that the political leadership of the defense sector has failed to fulfill its promise of safe skies over our country.” The Prime Minister argued the Defense Ministry valued their own party’s respective interests over national security.

However, the firing of the Defense Minister led to a political fallout in which the party in favor of Spruds, the Progressives, revoked support for Silina and their coalition government. They argued that Silina was merely using the Defense Ministry as a scapegoat for the disaster. After pulling out, Silina’s majority ruling in the government, with their tripartite coalition, dissipated without a parliamentary majority. With Silina politically isolated, an inability to pass legislation before the October elections led her to resign on May 14. For Latvia’s future, this government reckoning has major implications.
