Recently, AI investment in the United States has increased exponentially, with increasing government encouragement of AI development. Widespread use has prompted critics to argue about the potential ethical concerns of AI, including the impact on education, deepfake usage, and the overall effects on American infrastructure dynamics.
For context: the US has spent a total of $7.2 billion dollars on AI. This has included data structure design, data center building, and water for cooling. These investments have made AI one of the most significant commodities the U.S. has invested in.
While this extensive investment has resulted in broad advancement of AI, this is also a double-edged sword. One negative aspect of AI advancement is the potential for deepfakes, or falsified videos and images of real people, to improve to the point where people struggle to recognize genuine media. In fact, Californians rate AI as a top concern, primarily due to the danger of deepfakes; the statistics show that AI deepfakes have been widely accessible to the public, including malicious actors. Once used by these actors, deepfakes pose a threat to the public, aiding scam messages, designing misinformation, and even prompting manipulation to extort money.
Academic ethics have served as another area of concern. An analysis from MIT suggests that AI is causing “cognitive surrender,” or the idea that our brain completely surrenders the idea of learning and understanding; our brain cannot think independently, leading to further academic dishonesty. A majority of teachers and administrators reported that AI was a concern for academic honesty, to the extent that 92% are legitimately concerned. As polling suggests, AI is taking away integrity and complete focus, especially with schools not providing proper AI literacy courses.
Whether or not AI will lead to improvement of society or continue to fuel division over these concerns remains to be seen. For now, AI investment sees no signs of stopping, posing risks to societal truth and ethics.
